Is a Donor-Advised Fund Right for Me?

A donor advised fund is a philanthropic giving vehicle established at a public charity that allows you to make a charitable contribution, maximize income tax deductions and recommend grants from the fund to qualified charities of your choice.

They offer a simple, efficient, low-cost way to realize your philanthropic objectives when you make a tax-deductible contribution. We have prepared these examples to provide you with information to help you decide if establishing a donor-advised fund would allow you and your family to advance your philanthropic goals in the most effective way possible.

With the creation of the New Jersey Health Charitable Gift Fund, establishing your own named fund allows you to:

  • Expand the impact of your gifting with minimal administrative responsibilities
  • Take advantage of flexibility in your charitable-giving goals
  • Create a lasting legacy for family philanthropy
  • Advance the causes you care most about
  • Maximize income tax deductions for charitable contributions to the fullest extent of the law
  • Participate in investment portfolios typically restricted to institutional investors

Here are several scenarios that might help you decide if a donor-advised fund would be beneficial to you or your family.

Introduction

The New Jersey Health Charitable Gift Fund allows you to participate in investment portfolios typically restricted to institutional investors.

A donor-advised fund can be set up with a minimum $10,000 contribution through the New Jersey Health Charitable Gift Fund. If you would like to discuss your personal situation in-depth, or need additional information, contact Jeannine Hodkey at (908) 731-6592 or CharitableGiftFund@njhf.org.

Facilitating Year-End Tax Planning

You receive a year-end bonus and want to contribute to charity as part of your overall tax planning strategy. But, because it's the end of the year, you don't think you have enough time to adequately research which charitable organizations you would like to support and still be able to take advantage of tax benefits for that year.

Establishing and funding a donor-advised fund prior to December 31 allows you to receive an income tax deduction the year your gift is received and to delay recommending the charitable recipients until the next year or even later. Once you decide which organizations you would like to support, you can recommend grants to qualified charities. You can also continue to contribute to your fund periodically, receive an income tax deduction in the year you contribute and request the disbursement of grants in the future. So, if you want a tax deduction in a specific year but haven't decided exactly which organizations you'd like to support, a donor-advised fund will give you the flexibility to establish the fund, take the tax deduction during that year and recommend donations to qualified organizations in the future.

Managing Your Taxable Income

Your husband or wife receives a promotion and a significant salary increase. You want to manage your taxable income by helping to support your alma mater and several other charitable organizations.

Establishing a donor-advised fund prior to December 31 would allow you to take advantage of the allowable tax deduction that year and make distributions anytime in the future to qualified organizations that mean the most to you. Donor-advised funds are easy to set up. Because we complete all the filing requirements and take care of your disbursements, there is minimal paperwork for you. They are the perfect way to consolidate your charitable giving while continuing to support those causes that mean a lot to you and your family. And you'll receive a yearly report of the distributions for your personal records.

Honoring a Loved One's Wishes

When a beloved family member passes away, her will stipulates that her family continue to distribute her assets to a variety of charities she supported during her lifetime.

When your family first looked into setting up a small family foundation to advance your relative's philanthropic goals, they found that doing so would be time consuming and expensive to set up and maintain. An exploration of alternatives found that establishing a donor-advised fund would allow them to advance their relative's legacy while relieving them of the many administrative, accounting and reporting requirements necessary to set up a family foundation. Finally, they were happy to learn that they could name the fund in memory of their relative to complete her philanthropic legacy.

Converting a Family Foundation

You have been managing your family foundation for the past few years but it has become extremely time consuming and expensive to maintain. You'd love to find an alternative that would allow you to continue to meet your family's philanthropic goals but would relieve you of the time and expenses involved. Converting your family foundation to a donor-advised fund at New Jersey Health Foundation might be just the answer for you.

Donor-advised funds are easy to set up. There is no cost to you or your family foundation to establish and name your fund. We complete all the filing requirements and take care of your disbursements, so there is minimal paperwork for you as long as the fund exists.

Once you decide which organizations you would like to support you can recommend grants to qualified charities and the funds will be disbursed by the New Jersey Health Charitable Gift Fund. You can also continue to contribute to your fund, receive an income tax deduction in the year you contribute and disperse grants in the future.

Donor-advised funds provide the perfect way to consolidate your charitable giving while continuing to support those causes that are meaningful to you and your family.

Making Use of Your Appreciated Stock

You have appreciated stock that you'd like to use for philanthropic purposes. If you establish a donor-advised fund, you can contribute your appreciated stock to the fund. You indicate your recommendations regarding the distributions to the qualified organizations you wish to support. New Jersey Health Charitable Gift Fund will need to sell the assets in order to make distributions. You will not be taxed on the capital gain that would otherwise have resulted if you sold the stock yourself. And, you receive the tax deduction that year for the fair-market value of the stock.

Honoring a Family Member or Celebrating a Family Event

Your family reaches a milestone—an anniversary, the birth of a child or grandchild, a special birthday, a death in the family—and you would like to commemorate the event in a meaningful way.

A donor-advised fund allows you to name a fund to honor a person or an important event in your life and to make contributions in honor or in memory of that special person or event. Distributions from the fund can then be made to qualified charities that mean a lot to your honoree or as a philanthropic tool for future family grant making. In any of these scenarios, a donor-advised fund allows you to create a legacy to honor someone you love or a momentous event in your family's history.
